Apple’s Foldable iPhone Duo Hits Stores at $1,999

Apple’s first foldable phone is now in buyers’ hands. iPhone Duo, announced September 9, 2026, went on sale in more than 70 countries and regions, including the U.S., on Friday, October 23, after pre-orders opened October 16. At a starting price of $1,999, it is a premium bet, and the clearest sign yet that folding phones are moving from niche to mainstream.

The key facts

From Apple’s launch press release:

  • Price: Starts at $1,999 in the U.S., or $83.29 per month for 24 months, with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB options.
  • Displays: A 7.6-inch inner display when open and a 5.4-inch outer display when closed. Apple says the inner screen is 50% larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max’s, and the outer screen offers 90% of iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area.
  • Design: Grade 5 titanium, IP68 water and dust resistance, and a hinge Apple says is engineered from more than 100 components.
  • Chip: A20 Pro, the same chip as iPhone 18 Pro models.
  • Battery: A dual-battery design, one on each side. Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display.
  • Security: Touch ID built into the side button.
  • Connectivity: eSIM-only worldwide.
  • Colors: Star white and night sky.
  • Availability: October 23 in the first wave of countries, with 28 more starting October 30.

Accessories include a $79 iPhone Duo Case and a $129 iPhone Duo Folio with a kickstand.

What is actually new for users

Apple’s pitch is less about specs and more about new ways to use a phone:

  • Split View multitasking, letting you run two apps side by side on iPhone for the first time.
  • StandBy on either screen, even when not charging, so the phone can act as a clock, photo frame or widget display when propped up.
  • Camera tricks enabled by two screens, like taking a selfie with the rear cameras while previewing on the outer screen, or showing subjects a live preview.
  • Siri AI, a rebuilt Siri powered by Apple Intelligence, rolling out in beta with iOS 27, which Apple says is more useful on the large inner display.

Apple says Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already optimizing their apps for the folding design.

What Apple’s CEO said

In the announcement, Apple CEO John Ternus said: “iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.”

Why it matters

Foldables get Apple’s stamp of approval. Folding phones have existed for years from other manufacturers, but many buyers waited to see if Apple would commit. When Apple enters a category, app developers and accessory makers tend to follow, which can make the whole category more useful, including for non-Apple phones.

The price is a real barrier. At $1,999, iPhone Duo costs more than many laptops. Apple is leaning on trade-ins, its Apple Upgrade lease program and carrier deals to soften that, but for most households this is a premium luxury, not a default upgrade. Whether Apple can bring the price down in future generations is the biggest question for mass adoption.

Durability is the long-term test. Apple highlights new materials for the inner display and a reinforced hinge, and it says the nano-texture finish minimizes crease visibility. How well that holds up after a year or two of daily folding is unknown until owners report back. Long-term durability: TBD.

Phones are becoming small tablets. Split View and a 7.6-inch screen blur the line between iPhone and iPad mini. For people who carry both, a foldable could replace two devices, which helps justify the price for some buyers.

AI is now a selling point for hardware. Apple is positioning the large screen as a better home for Siri AI, keeping the assistant open alongside apps. It is another sign that AI features are becoming central to how phones are marketed. Note that Apple says some Apple Intelligence features have daily usage limits, and expanded access will be offered “for a fee in the future.” Pricing for that: TBD.

Should you buy one?

If you want the biggest possible screen in your pocket and the price fits your budget, iPhone Duo is Apple’s most ambitious phone in years. If you are cost-conscious or worried about long-term durability, waiting for early owner reviews and a second generation is a reasonable choice.

The bottom line

iPhone Duo marks the moment Apple bet that folding phones are ready for regular people. The hardware is ambitious and the software is built around the new form factor, but the $1,999 price means its real impact may show up in how it shapes the next few years of phones, not in this year’s sales.
